World News – GB – Parish, President of Crystal Palace, explains the failure of the Big Picture project

Crystal Palace president Steve Parish has explained why the Big Picture project was rejected and said many of its proposals « strike at the heart of value football »

Premier League clubs and the FA halt plans for an English football revolution proposed by Liverpool and Manchester United in an emergency meeting on Wednesday

Parish said: « Of course we should always be looking at ways to improve the game and this plan has some ideas of merit But we already have an amazing product and in my opinion we are tinkering with it at our peril.

« Many of Project Big Picture’s proposals go to the heart of football’s core value, that results are decided on merit and success The founders of the Premier League understood and crafted a constitution that prevented radical and reckless change

« Today I represent Crystal Palace around the table, but I am fully aware that we are also an agent for the 72 clubs of the EFL and that we have a duty of care to the game in everything that we do

« The combination of danger and glory is essential to what we believe to be sport It is not and should not be comfortable for anyone competing, especially in the Premier League where each team faces its own drama perilous 90 minutes every week

« It’s our culture that makes the league what it is: the packed crowds, the passion, the heartbreaking and heartbreaking amount that matters What keeps us going is the dream of building our clubs through with the right investment, insight and a pinch of luck to reach a new level

« It was done Chelsea and Manchester City reached new heights Financial investment was significant, but they spent wisely, appointed great managers, recruited well and built fantastic youth systems

« If Project Big Picture had been presented 20 years ago, neither would have been possible and neither would have been anointed in the manner suggested now

« As a supporter of a small club, I accept that continued success and glory should bring rewards and benefits The overall trading income and Champions League income of some dwarf clubs like mine

« Some people may think that we are mistaken to think that we can build and reach the same heights someday These people seem to think that our fate was decided long ago, and we should know our place But as l ‘Leicester City showed, anything is possible – currently
