The Scottish government has been urged to step up testing of nursing home visitors to protect those most at risk

A review of the testing strategy released by the Scottish government on Friday said the country was « on track » to achieve 65,000 tests per day during the winter, thanks to the opening of three regional centers in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen as well as an increase in UK government testing

The document, written by Acting Chief Medical Officer Gregor Smith, National Clinical Director Jason Leitch, Chief Nurse Fiona McQueen and Chief Scientists, also outlines what they believe are the priorities of the healthcare system. Scottish test as winter approaches

Counselors said protecting those most at risk from serious damage from the virus should be a top priority, along with screening people with symptoms and in hospital

The document says: “Given this evidence, the consensus view of clinical and scientific advisers is that the priority given to additional testing capacity to protect those most vulnerable to severe harm should focus on additional routine tests to reduce the risk of asymptomatic transmission in nursing homes

« This could include extending routine testing to staff visiting nursing homes, stratified by risk – focusing first, for example, on those providing personal care in close contact to residents. » nursing homes – to designated visitors to nursing homes and staff who provide home care for the most vulnerable «

Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon said last week she would be open to routine testing of nursing home visitors

She said: “People entering and leaving nursing homes are clearly one of those groups that we would consider considering for testing in the future. »

The strategy also calls for work to improve the time it takes for results to be received by those tested

Ms McQueen said: ‘NHS Scotland’s Test and Protect system is working well, even with an increase in cases, and the country is on track to expand its overall testing capacity to 65,000 tests per day in winter

« However, while the full scale of the pandemic in Scotland during the winter months is currently unknown, it is essential that more focus be placed on reducing test turnaround times so that we can further reduce the transmission by enabling rapid contact tracing and isolation of close contacts Initiatives such as the additional regional laboratories of NHS Scotland will support this

« It is also essential that additional testing capacity is used to protect the most vulnerable, including prioritizing additional routine testing to reduce the risk of asymptomatic transmission in nursing homes

« This could include extending routine testing to visiting nursing home staff and visitors to designated nursing homes as well as those providing home care

« We also recommend the expansion of screening of health workers, with an emphasis on those caring for high-risk patient groups and potentially in areas where community prevalence is higher. »
