Futuristic jet suit that could transport paramedic to isolated victim in just minutes could save hundreds of lives

The state-of-the-art suit, which was demonstrated during a test flight in the Lake District, could be the type of technology crucial to helping mountain rescue teams in Scotland reduce their emergency response times

Scottish Mountain Rescue Service Vice President Kev Mitchell hopes rescue teams in Scotland may soon benefit from the technology

Speaking to the Herald, he said: « Obviously in Scotland we have some very mountainous and steep areas so I think it’s a very exciting development.

“From a mountain rescue point of view, we are really excited to be able to use this technology to kill victims faster.

« If a person had an acute medical problem like a heart attack or stroke where very, very quick medical intervention could make a difference, then the jet pack could dramatically increase their chances of survival.

« We are not yet aware of the meteorological constraints like with helicopters and drones, but I suspect there will be meteorological constraints with the jet pack as well.

« There will definitely be limits, but it’s a fantastic development that could save hundreds of lives. »

The company responsible for developing the technology, Gravity Industries, had been in talks with the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) for the past year.

The helicopter emergency service currently operates at the Scottish borders and parts of northern England

According to GNAAS, the crash site would have taken around 25 minutes to reach on foot, but M Browning arrived in his 1,050-horsepower jet suit in 90 seconds

Andy Mawson, GNAAS director of operations and paramedic, said the Lake District could be a possible location for a ‘jet suit paramedic’ following a study of charity call data

He said: “It has shown dozens of patients each month in the complex but relatively small geographic footprint of the lakes.

« We could see the need. What we didn’t know for sure was how it would work in practice Well we’ve seen it now and it’s, quite honestly, great. »
