WOOLWORTHS fans were beside themselves after a tweet claimed the store was making a comeback in the UK – but it may have been a cruel joke

The retailer’s 800 stores in the UK then closed in January of the following year, with around 27,000 workers laid off

If it returns to the main streets of the UK, it would be for the first time in a decade

A Twitter account named Woolworths UK said today: « Here to save 2020! Woolworths is coming back to your main street, as a physical store! »

The account said Woolworths is returning to Main Street with three trial stores slated to open in late 2021, but has not confirmed where they will be located

Our return will be via 3 trial stores, scheduled to open in late 2021 I can’t wait to be back! ❤️ https: // tco / HPT9g3saLj

But the announcement was made on an unverified Twitter account and is littered with misspellings, casting doubt on the authenticity of the posts

One said: « Omg Woolworths is coming back to bring back cheap stationery and the best photo and mix ever »

Another added: « I really miss Woolworths as much as you can miss any shop It would be awesome »

And a third wrote: « I was slightly excited about the return of the Woolworths until I realized that there won’t be that bin of singles CDs for 99p anymore, mainly because it doesn’t there are more single CDs «

Woolworths opened its first British store in Liverpool in 1909 and has become a staple in the shopping streets of the UK

In 2009 Shop Direct, owner of Littlewoods, bought the brand and sold it to customers online through Woolworthcom

The company ran the retail site, but closed it six years later in 2015 and merged it into its Very brand

The Sun reached out to Shop Direct, renamed The Very Group last year, for comment

A spokesperson for the company told the Daily Mail he had not heard of any plans to open physical Woolworths stores

In April 2017, former Woolworths manager Tony Page hinted that the Woolworths brand could return to the streets

He said: « I’m still emotionally attached to it. I still think it has a role in the future »

He said that while he envisions it still being a physical store, Woolworths – nicknamed Woolies – might be better off as a member of the community, rather than in malls

But the attempt to resuscitate Woolworths was later criticized by retail pundits, who said the hypermarket was a thing of the past
