The Gophers men’s basketball team was troubled by their no-shows three weeks ago at the Big Ten opener against Illinois. « Wiped out », head coach Richard Pitino described part of it days later.

Just six half-way down, Minnesota quickly fell back to 16th after the break and 37 points in an 82:57 demolition against Michigan No. 10 at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The 25-point loss was only two fewer than their Illinois loss.

Pitino said away games in the COVID era feel more like neutral competitions with no many fans in the arenas, which Gabe Kalscheur and Isaiah repeated to you on Wednesday, but Minnesota continues to fight away from the Williams Arena. The U is 10-0 at The Barn, including three wins over the Big Ten opponents. But Minnesota are down 3-0, including a 12-point loss to Wisconsin on New Years Eve.

« We’ve had some great moments after 13 games this year, but we have three, really some guys, » said Pitino. « But those three that we had duds against are some really good teams. I think Michigan has as much talent as any team in the country I’ve seen. »

Michigan remains the last undefeated Big Ten program 10-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big Ten. The Wolverines have established themselves as the front runners by a quarter of the conference schedule.

The best matchup of the game was between 7 feet: Gophers ‘Liam Robbins versus Wolverines’ Hunter Dickinson. Dickinson, the Big Ten newcomer of the week, took the best from Robbins, Oscar Robertson international of the week.

Dickinson, who leads the Big Ten with a field goal percentage of 72 percent, had a career high of 28 points in 12-of-15 shooting. He was a handful from the start when he got an offensive rebound and outback on first possession and scored 14 points in the first half on 7-of-9 shooting.

« He was phenomenal, » said Pitino. « We talked about catching him but much like (Iowas Luka) Garza it gets him in the right places and goes so fast that it was difficult to really do anything. Our pick and roll coverage was bad We let go of him on the back and we weren’t good there. He’s a really good player.  »

The Gophers finished 12 turnovers and only six assists. In the first half, they had eight turnovers, resulting in 11 Wolverines points.

Michigan led by up to 12 points in the first half, but Marcus Carr’s solo 6-0 run cut it in half to give Minnesota hope. After starting 1 to 5 from the field, he hit two three-points and made the U’s first two free throws to bring it to 32-26 during the break.

Overall, Carr, who entered the Mid-Season Wooden Award top 25 list on Wednesday, continues to fight like his other teammates on the road. He finished the 5-of-15 shootout against the Wolverines with 14 points after losing 16 points to the Illinois and 10 points to the Badgers. He shot 3 for 13 in those other two losses.
