Noah Williams scored six direct points at the start of the second half, extending the Cougars’ lead to 16 points. Isaac Bonton made 3-pointers in a row to make it 62-39 11:42.

Washington State retaliated for UCLA’s 30-point loss to the Cougars on January 14 with an 81- 73 Pac-12 win against the Bruins in Pullman Thursday night.

The Bruins had a counterstrike, but it was too late. UCLA (13-5 total, 9-3 Pac-12) used a press in court that made Washington State nervous in the final minutes and reduced the lead to 78-71 by 1:09 – as narrow as it has been since the opening minutes of the game – but Bonton helped get it off the free-throw line.

« It was too late when we turned it on, » said UCLA point guard Tyger Campbell of the press. « We can’t let it get to that point. »

Bonton finished with 26 points, including four 3s. He also added five rebounds and five assists. Washington State (11-8, 5-8 Pac-12) took 13th place with 22 points (59 percent) out of the 3-point range.

« Defense is our problem. We didn’t finish the work on the 3-point line, « said UCLA coach Mick Cronin. « We lost 39-15 on the 3-point line. »

UCLA striker Cody Riley tried to play on his sprained right ankle which kept him out of the Bruins’ last game against USC, but he struggled . Riley only played 10 minutes, scored four points and was fouled.

Johnny Juzang led UCLA with 25 points (17 in the second half) in 7v18, and Tyger Campbell added 17 points and five Add templates. Jaime Jaquez Jr. was the third top scorer at just seven.

The team was without center Jalen Hill, who is not on the team for personal reasons.

« Cody is a strong, talented player. It’s difficult not to have him out there, « said Juzang. « We still found a way to score decently, but 81 is just too much. »

Riley started the game but only played six minutes in the first half. His absence was offensive. The Bruins shot 44% off the field, including a 5v20 game from outside the bow.

« It had nothing to do with his ankle, » Cronin said of Riley. « I love him, he was a great player for us, but tonight was unacceptable. »

Riley fouled two times in the first half but took his third and fourth within the first 56 seconds of the second half.

UCLA, who suffered an 18-point loss to USC, led 12:10 in the first half at 2:10 pm before a DJ Rodman 3-pointer gave the Cougars an edge they never gave up .

Rodman – a SoCal native of JSerra High – made three consecutive 3-point points to start the game, and gave him nine of the Cougars’ first 14 points when they got their first four 3-point Attempts made.

Washington State finished the first half with seven 3-pointers and was leading 42:32 at halftime.

The Bruins have lost three of their last four games, but Campbell said their confidence has not deteriorated.

« The confidence is never gone, » said Campbell as he got back on track. « We go into every game and know we can play. »
