Justin Timberlake apologized to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson on Friday amid his setback for his behavior towards both stars captured in a new documentary.
Timberlake said in an Instagram post that he was « from benefited a system that condones misogyny and racism « and that he is sorry for the number of times his actions » contributed to the problem « .
» I would like to specifically apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson individually for doing this Care for and respect women and know I have failed, « Timberlake wrote.
Timberlake’s message came after Instagram users flooded his account with comments asking him to contact Spears for his post-split behavior in 2002 to apologize for what was highlighted in the documentary Framing Britney Spears. That year his hit « Cry Me a River » had a Spears look and seemed to blame her for cheating on him.
« He’s essentially arming the video for one of his singles in order to keep her down stressing their relationship, « said Wesley Morris, a New York Times critic, in Framing Britney Spears.
Timberlake’s song and comments about their sexual relationship at the time fueled and fueled an already toxic tabloid obsession with Spears Misogynist narrative that she was solely responsible for their widely publicized breakup.
It also came out largely unscathed after the infamous 2004 Super Bowl incident in which he tore off Jackson’s top to expose her chest on live television while her career and reputation have suffered.
Justin Timberlake is on stage at the 2008 ESPY Awards in front of a video of himself and Janet Jackson from Super Bowl 38.
Timberlake went on tue e torrent of online criticism he’s received since the documentary came out saying, “I’ve seen the news, tags, comments and concerns and I want to reply.” He added, “I feel too forced to respond, in part because everyone involved deserves better and most of all because this is a bigger conversation that I wholeheartedly want to participate in and grow. « Timberlake also said his apology wasn’t » the Acquitted « but that he wants to take responsibility for his missteps.
» I care very much about the well-being of the people I love and have loved, « he said. « I can do better and I will do better. »
