A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck southeast of the Loyalty Islands on Wednesday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) announced.
The epicenter of the quake was 424 km east of Tadine, New Caledonia, and was at a depth of 10 km, according to EMSC.
The quake, which was upgraded from an earlier magnitude of 7.1, followed at least three more earthquakes in the region with a magnitude of 5.7 to 6.1 in a little over an hour.
The US tsunami warning system indicated that a tsunami watch was in operation in American Samoa and that other regions including Vanuatu, Fiji, New Zealand had potential for Tsunamis exists.
