The « Playoffs on the Patios » Bills matchday event at Chippewa is already a great success. 8 hours after the announcement that Chippewa would be partially closed to traffic so that 260 Bills fans can safely cheer the team outdoors together, the event was sold out. Chris Ring (Rec Room) who ran the company with Jay Manno (SoHo) told me he never thought people would react the way they did.

« I can’t believe how people quickly signed up to be a part of it, « said Ring. « I’ve probably got 800 texts and emails from people who didn’t get a reservation for this particular matchday event. People are thrilled to see the bills together. It’s been a great response and something we’re prepared for . Jay and I have years of experience in the entertainment and restaurant business, so we will meet all expectations. «

Ring also told me that there were initial talks to hold this event in another part of WNY. » A friend of Jay called us and mentioned the idea for an event that might be held in Williamsville. We asked if we could host it on Chippewa and he was cool with that. We were lucky because the mayor had extended the license for the summer terrace until May with the thought that we could possibly have a Christmas market. But then we went to Orange and nothing happened. But we had submitted the documents to the city and had all permits. We just had to rent the tables and chairs and the video walls. “

While the Rec Room is currently closed, this event is a shining light at the end of a very long and dark tunnel. « We tried the take-out angle during the pandemic, » said Ring. “But we lost money. We are closed. With 260 people and adequate social distance (67 tables – 8 feet apart), it’s worth it. We can generate city tax revenue that will get people back to work for a while, and 260 Bills fans who don’t make it into the game will have something to cheer about. «

Ring is confident that everything will go according to plan on game day. » If everyone behaves (and if the bills win) we will try to get approval for future games. «

It’s interesting to find that this game day exercise at Chippewa has always been one of the overarching visions for the original road closure concept that played out in the wake of the pandemic. I don’t think anyone could have imagined the Bills up their asses this past summer and that Chippewa would be lining up for such madness on game day in January. Sometimes when the stars are aligned – in this case there are many stars – we see greatness come about.

Once the pandemic is over, it would be amazing to see this kind of street party all year round with even more players for all kinds of celebratory occasions.

No matter where you are next Saturday, meet a ll necessary precautionary measures against pandemics. Remember to « Celebrate Safely! »
