After 27 games of one game against leaders Norwich City, Brentford is in second place ahead of Reading against Brentford on Wednesday. They will look to move into first place against Reading, another team fighting for promotion to the Premier League. The Royals are six points behind Brentford, but they are not a side to mess with. In fact, both teams have lost just one game each in their last six games, both going to the FA Cup.
While Brentford beat Leicester City, the Premier League title contender, they recovered by 14 goals in only their last three games. Their attack is driven by Ivan Toney, who has already scored 22 goals and 7 assists this season. The English striker is a special young player and should be a real treat in the Premier League if Brentford manages to keep his talents away from the big clubs. Overall, those two sides are only a hair apart, but it will take a long time for Reading to stop the bees.
Brentford’s attack is incredible regardless of who they play against. Their 4-3-3 formation allows them to counter and knock down the wings with their trio of Sergi Canos, Bryan Mbeumo and of course Toney. These three players alone have been involved in 48 of Brentford’s goals this season, a remarkable feat. Behind them, Josh Dasilva is also a top midfielder. He just reiterates the fact that Brentford has talent all over the field.
If their current form isn’t a tell-tale sign, this team just doesn’t like losing games. Aside from losing to Leicester in the FA Cup and Tottenham in the League Cup, they haven’t lost a game since the end of October when they were stunned away by Stoke City. In total, they’re 20 games unbeaten in the EFL championship, a mark I don’t think will topple on Wednesday.
The saying goes: a hungry dog runs faster. Reading will want to make sure that they are doing everything they can to get top of the table ahead of the promotional playoffs. With that said, they were also in good shape and last lost to Luton Town in the FA Cup. Reading’s attack isn’t as electrifying as Brentford’s, but Lucas Joao’s 15 goals this season show that they can get the ball into the net.
« We remain disciplined about what we control. We try to keep an eye on ourselves and our environment wherever we can get better, improve our game. That is the main focus. «
Unfortunately, the story is not on the side of the royals. Reading has only won this head-to-head match once in the past three years. The last two games ended 3-1 and 3-0 in favor of the bees, which could make them doubt their chances on Wednesday. In addition, these two teams have « over » scored 2.5 goals out of four in their last five games. Reading got the same “over” on four of the last five too, which makes you wonder if this could be a goal feast.
Overall, the best bet for this game is the Brentford moneyline at 102. It makes sense to hit the overall target, but the goal can be so volatile in the championship. This Brentford team has scored a lot of goals lately, but that will run dry eventually.
Even so, this Brentford team is almost too good to bet on a crime that could likely occur in the Premier League. Their record against Reading lately is the last straw that makes this bet seem really likely. After all, with great odds, it’s hard to finally miss out on Brentford’s victory.
