World News – UA – AFL legend Dr Bruce Reid has died after two years of battle


The football world is in mourning after the death of Essendon icon Dr. Bruce Reid at the age of 74 after a two-year health battle

The former Hawthorn player was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 and left Essendon after more than 36 years as the club’s senior medical officer

Reid served during the club’s tumultuous supplement scandal, but was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing by the AFL, despite 34 Essendon players being forced to serve doping bans and Former Essendon coach James Hird was banned for 12 months

Reid was paid $ 1.4 million earlier this year after contracting asbestos-related cancer

Reid made a deal with asbestos makers Amaca Pty Ltd and Seltsam Pty Ltd after being exposed to dust and asbestos fibers while building his home in Melbourne in 1975

His death comes just days after Essendon announced that Reid would be elevated to legendary status at the club’s Hall of Fame event in 2021

Former Essendon and St Kilda star Brendon Goddard was among the first to pay tribute to Reid

Former Essendon player Andy Welsh also posted on Twitter with a heartbroken emoji: « Broken but so grateful to have had Bruce in our life You keep quiet buddy, you were really unique in his kind RIP «
