AFL star Harley Bennell rushed to hospital after a night out on the Gold Coast – just hours after announcing her retirement following a COVID-19 violation

The Melbourne Demons player was ordered to leave Queensland after breaking the club bubble to visit an ‘unapproved local’ in Maroochydore on September 19

Despite his orders from the AFL, Bennell stayed on the Gold Coast with friends while the demons tried to organize his flight back to Perth

Bennell was reportedly taken to hospital on Monday evening after police were called to the Aria building in Broadbeach following reports of a disorder around 8 p.m.

Sources told the Courier-Mail that Bennell was very drunk after celebrating the end of his AFL career and the officers decided to call an ambulance

The 27-year-old (pictured in action for The Demons) broke AFL’s COVID-19 return-to-play safety protocols to visit an ‘unapproved local’ in Maroochydore on September 19

Bennell’s partner Amy Crellin and their child have already left the state in the days following her coronavirus violation

Bennell’s mother Kayleen said she worried about her son’s mental state after announcing her retirement from the game

‘Very disappointing knowing my son is still stuck in Queensland with no family support,’ she wrote on Facebook

Kayleen shared her concerns with a Facebook group for The Demons, along with screenshots of AFL fans slamming her son

Earlier Melbourne CEO Gary Pert said Bennell’s actions were selfish and a ‘blatant violation’ of AFL’s COVID-19 protocols

‘He not only put himself, his teammates and the competition at risk, but he failed to live up to the values of Melbourne Football Club’

Upon learning of a potential violation, the demons immediately notified the AFL, which investigated the case

AFL General Counsel Andrew Dillon has said AFL Protocols are the gaming license of the competition and anyone who violates them will be held to account

«  Harley knew the rules and could have put her club and the competition at risk on the eve of a final campaign,  » Dillon said

The midfielder and former No2 draft pick took to social media to mark the time of his 88-game roller coaster career, which began in 2011 at the Gold Coast

Posting a photo on Instagram of himself in a jumper at his three AFL clubs – the Suns, Fremantle and the Demons – Bennell said it was the «  10 best years of my life  »

Bennell started his AFL career with the Gold Coast Suns (pictured) where he had a breakout season in 2012

Bennell looked set to land a new contract with the club ahead of indiscretion after appearing in five games in his debut season at Melbourne

Injuries kept him from playing just two games in four years at Fremantle and he left the Dockers in July 2019

Melbourne hailed Bennell’s retirement, posting on social media: ‘I wish you all the best for the future, Harley’

Bennell played his best football at the Suns, enjoying a strong season in 2012 when he finished second to the club’s best and fairest behind Gary Ablett Jnr

Discipline issues saw him fall out of favor at Gold Coast and he was traded to Fremantle at the end of the 2015 season
