His Excellency the Governor General has accepted the Government’s advice to appoint the Honorable Justice Simon Steward and the Honorable Justice Jacqueline Gleeson as Judges of the High Court of Australia

Justice Steward and Justice Gleeson will respectively fill the vacancies arising from the retirement of the Honorable Justice Geoffrey Nettle AC on November 30, 2020 and the Honorable Justice Virginia Bell AC on February 28, 2021

Judge Steward received a Bachelor of Laws degree (High Honors) in 1990 and a Masters of Laws in 2000 from the University of Melbourne He was admitted to practice as a lawyer in the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1992 and signed the role of the High Court in the same year

Justice Steward was called to the Victoria Bar in 1999 and was appointed Silk in 2009 In 2009 he started as a Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne Law School He was appointed a judge of the Court Federal Council of Australia in 2017 and began his judicial career in 2018

Judge Gleeson graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts in 1986 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1989 She began practicing at the New South Wales Bar in 1991 Judge Gleeson left the Bar at the end of 2000 to practice as a lawyer, first with the Australian Broadcasting Authority and later with the Australian Government Solicitor, before returning to the Bar in 2007

Justice Gleeson graduated with an LL.M. from the University of Sydney in 2005 and was appointed Senior Counsel in 2012 She was appointed a Federal Court Judge in 2014
