Equality groups have marked Perth mayor’s comments on transgender people on breakfast radio « disgusting and bigoted »
Basil Zempilas, who was elected to office earlier this month, told listeners to the breakfast show that he co-hosted on 6PR that it was « wrong » for someone to identifies as a different gender from their physical anatomy
M Zempilas then mocked a suggestion by co-host Steve Mills that he would likely come into contact with transgender people in his role as Lord Mayor
M Zempilas also called on all women with penises to call the radio station for a chance to win a $ 100 voucher.
When M Mills suggested that members of the wider community might disagree with his position, Mr. Zempilas replied: « Well if you want to get soft, left handed, namby-pamby »
The couple had discussed an LGBTIQ boxing tournament in Sydney, which led to a debate over parents who did not identify their children as male or female
« These comments are disgusting, sectarian, narrow-minded, parochial and fundamentally deny contemporary science, » they said
« Moreover, it puts LGBTQIA people at increased risk of harm, when we are already a vulnerable group in society »
« It is possible to appear one way and feel another and when someone says they are transgender, they are just saying that they feel differently than the way they appear, » M said. Ward
« [That is,] sex is your physical appearance and biology while sex is how you identify yourself psychologically, whether you are female or male »
M Ward said comments such as the stigma fueled by M Zempilas around the transgender community, describing mental health issues among transgender people as ‘endemic’
« I think people need to educate themselves on what they are talking about and if they have this scene, and they have such a large audience, they should be making informed statements, » he said.
However, M Zempilas told local publication Out in Perth that he would apologize if anyone was offended as it was not his intention
By accepting the role of Lord Mayor, Mr. Zempilas said he would step down from his high-level job on the 6PR radio show later this year
He said he will remain a sports presenter for Seven West Media and continue to write a weekly column for the West Australian newspaper, which is also owned by Seven West Media
This column was also the source of negative reactions from human rights groups, after Mr. Zempilas wrote of how he would ‘forcefully evict’ homeless people from the streets of Perth, calling them the ‘bane’ of the city
