World News – UA – ‘Guaranteed they had no idea’: admittance of great Australian player Rafael Nadal

The French Open was swept away after fears over a controversial equipment change proved to be correct on the first day of the rescheduled tournament

Persistent drizzle and cold wind swept through Roland Garros on Sunday, with conditions – which are expected to last for two weeks – compounding problems with the tournament’s new Wilson tennis balls

Rafael Nadal led complaints about Babolat’s switch to Wilson ahead of the event, saying the new ball was « super heavy » and « dangerous » for players’ bodies

« In Mallorca in hot weather the ball was very slow I think (it’s) not a good ball to play on clay, honestly That’s my personal opinion, » he said

« Even then it makes it more difficult But I knew before I got here So no problem at all Just take the challenge

« (But) I really believe the organization needs to take a look at it for the next two years, for the health of the players as well, because the ball is super heavy »

According to Australian double Paul McNamee, the change of ball dramatically reduced Nadal’s hopes of winning a 13th title at Roland Garros

McNamee believes Roland Garros tournament director Guy Forget « had absolutely no idea » that Babalot’s move to Wilson would backfire so dramatically

« I’m not sure Rafa can win a Herculean task if you reduce Rafa’s effects, it’s like making John Isner take second serve, » McNamee wrote on Twitter

« I guarantee the Roland Garros officials had absolutely no idea that passing Babolat balls to Wilson would produce heavier balls they never saw coming

« I guess tournament director Guy Forget, a good guy, is a little red right now »

McNamee, who has won five Grand Slam doubles titles in his career, believes the French Open will make another change for 2021 no matter what – but « especially » if Nadal doesn’t win the title

« If any of (Dominic) Thiem or Novak (Djokovic), and in particular Rafa, don’t win, I can guarantee they will change for next year, » he wrote

Nadal’s concerns will not have eased before his first round match at Roland Garros on Monday evening AEST

Britain’s 32nd seed Dan Evans, ousted from tournament by resurrected Kei Nishikori, says Wilson balls were the worst part of playing in cold conditions

« Some of these bullets we were using wouldn’t be given to a dog to chew on, » Evans told reporters

« I mean listen, this is what it is It’s brutal It’s so cold I think the bullets are the most important thing Maybe they got a little wrong with the balls It’s hard to get this ball to go anywhere «

Australian Ellen Perez, who competed in the doubles at Roland Garros, shared a video of Juan Ignacio Londero and Federico Delbonis’ faces on Sunday
