World News – UA – How Olivia Deeble Conquered Her Body Image Problems

Olivia Deeble may not have royal blood like her Disney princess character in the new Secret Society of Second Born Royals movie, but she is also familiar growing up in front of the public sometimes severe

The 18-year-old – who is part of a dynasty of Australian actors that includes grandfather Reg Gorman (of Sullivans fame) and mother, Neighbors mainstay Kate Gorman – played Raffy Morrison on Home and Away for more than three years from the age of 13

And while she feels lucky that she hasn’t experienced too much hate online, she admits there were times she struggled to have some of the most formative years of her life onscreen for that everyone can see them The scrutiny of her appearance and weight left her with body image issues and a healthy distrust of social media that took her years to overcome

“I don’t think it was ever intentionally mean, it’s just because I was on TV every night a lot of people would say, ‘Wow, you’re a lot thinner in real life – you have looks really big on TV, ‘”Deeble says via a Zoom call from her Melbourne home where she is preparing for her final exams while locked out

“It’s just that being on social media and the social expectation of being a certain body type, you just say, ‘Wow, that was a little bit shocking’ But now I kind of take it like that. what and I said, ‘Yeah, I was 14 and my weight was fluctuating as I was still growing and that’s good’  »

Deeble says it was her mother’s encouragement and positivity and the realization that her profile at home and elsewhere made her a role model for young girls that turned her over and helped her adopt. a more positive state of mind Meeting a young fan who « made a really degrading comment about herself » shocked Deeble by making her realize that she couldn’t « spread the positivity and self-love if I didn’t have this for myself »

« There is nothing wrong with my body at all and I am now at a real place of self-esteem and I recognize that is who I am », she said « I am healthy and i’m fit and i’m happy and that’s all that matters

« I can’t fix the fact that I’m 5 feet tall and my curves – and it’s beautiful I can’t change that, I won’t be able to grow taller or stretch my legs What if I can’t change it , why the hell am I mad about this?  »

Deeble’s profile may be set to get a lot higher thanks to Disney’s Secret Society of Second Born Royals, in which she stars as Roxana, who is part of an undercover group of super princes and princesses. Mighty who learn to protect the world from nefarious forces Hope is high that this will be the first in a new High School Musical or Descendants-type franchise, and with the Disney streaming service now having passed 60 million subscribers in the world, Deeble says she’s a little overwhelmed – but excited – by the potential to reach

« It’s confusing to me and I can’t understand it, » she said laughing « It’s not that it’s intimidating, I’m not afraid of it but I don’t think you can be ready for it  »

Secret Society came at the right time for Deeble She had already made the decision to move from Summer Bay to the next step in her career when she scored the role after a series of self-recorded auditions The experience and « exponentially larger » scale of working on a large studio production came as a shock to Deeble. But she says the stamina, speed and versatility she had learned during the rapid shoot program soapie held her well, as it had been for Australian A-listers such as Chris Hemsworth and Margot Robbie who came before her.

« It’s just the most amazing training ground and I’m so grateful for my time on it, » she said. « And just learn tricks of the trade Just having a conversation with Ray Meagher – Alf Stewart – is amazing These people who have been there for so long and know so much, just watching their process is such an experience. fantastic »

As Deeble, who spent his recent 18th birthday in lockdown eating antipasto and drinking Aperol Spritzes with his family, says the current COVID-related production shutdowns around the world have come at a frustrating time for her career momentum, she is grateful for the opportunity to be able to focus on finishing her studies after years of juggling classes with filming engagements. She is keen to build on the breakthroughs she has made in the United States, but she also has her eye on training at the Jacques Lecoq International Theater School, taking the same clown course as her colleague who graduated from Home and Away Isla Fisher over 20 years ago

She also has an ambition to work in the theater, but wherever she finds herself – and whatever the background – she would love nothing more than to ‘shoot a Chris Hemsworth’ and make Australia her own. based

“I think the end goal is to buy a huge mansion in Byron Bay and fly away when I need it,” she said “But I’m about to finish high school and I have a lot to do I want to go to London, I want to go to LA, I want to go to New York – I want to work everywhere and I want to continue learning and training  »
