Scott Morrison wants Australia to become one of the world’s leading digital economies within the next 10 years

Prime Minister says consumers and businesses have been embracing online technologies at breakneck speed during coronavirus pandemic

He wants to get out of the health and economic crisis to get the country out of recession

« Our challenge is to keep our foot on the digital accelerator, as we emerge on the other side of this pandemic, » said M Morrison at a virtual e-commerce summit on Wednesday

« While we may marvel at innovation and digital acceleration, the big picture is that our economy has taken a huge hit

« So we have two stories unfolding simultaneously in Australia – an economy that is experiencing the worst economic circumstances since the Great Depression, and a fierce adaptation in which businesses have embarked to keep those circumstances at bay »

One in four people changed their delivery model in the first three weeks, and almost a third expanded their online presence

Australia Post delivered an additional 26 million parcels between March and May, an average of two million per day

In April alone, 52 million Australian households bought something online, and over 200,000 did so for the first time

Online sales topped $ 3 billion in August, an 81% increase over the previous year

Prime Minister places national broadband network upgrades and investments in 5G technologies at the center of his speech

« The digital economy is key to creating the jobs Australia needs, » said M Morrison

« It’s not just individuals who need to prepare for such a change – every Australian business needs to understand what lies ahead »
