One in seven Australians over 50 has the first signs of blindness, but many are not doing anything about it

Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in Australia, and survey results released Tuesday show many people are skipping crucial exams that could help maintain their sight

Regular eye exams can detect conditions and ensure proper treatment is recommended, said the Macular Disease Foundation, which commissioned the YouGov Galaxy survey

More than 80% of 623 people surveyed in February knew they should have an eye exam at least every two years, Foundation chief Dee Hopkins said

« Even if they know it, almost 40% play with their eyesight by skipping these exams, » she added

‘They often juggle the needs of children and elderly parents This is also the age when many other health tests are needed Unfortunately, eye exams are often pushed to last on the list when people lack of time ‘

The foundation has launched an online tool wwwcheckmymaculacomau to help people understand the severity of macular degeneration

The quiz asks a series of questions and provides a risk analysis and a link to schedule a visual exam or get more information
