The first of new direct passenger flights from Hobart to Flinders and King Islands has landed, giving more Tasmanians the chance to explore unique parts of our state
I’m told ticket sales have taken off, with over 1,000 Tasmanians already seizing the opportunity to fly straight to two tourist crown jewels in Tasmania
Sharp Airlines will offer three services per week on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays between Hobart and the Flinders and King Islands
Direct flights are expected to inject thousands of dollars into the islands’ economies and will be an important link for islanders who want to travel to Hobart and experience all that is on offer in southern Tasmania
The Tasmanian Liberal Government is supporting these services for an initial 18-week trial period, subscribing to the services until the end of January Based on a 50% takeover during this period, the subscribed cost will be approximately $ 225,000
This trial period gives Tasmanians the opportunity to sustain the service and will determine its future viability and the airline’s commitment to maintain the service
Importantly, Tasmanians can use their travel vouchers to explore the islands with open registrations through the Make Yourself at Home website from 7pm tonight.
