World News – UA – Serena Williams withdraws from Roland Garros due to injury

Serena Williams withdrew from Roland Garros with an Achilles tendon injury on Wednesday shortly before having to face Tsvetana Pironkova in the second round

The 39-year-old American, former three-time Roland Garros champion, struggled to win a record 24th Grand Slam title

« I have trouble walking, » Williams said at a press conference. « I felt like I had to walk with a limp »

Williams was injured in her semi-final loss to Victoria Azarenka at the US Open and said ahead of her Roland Garros campaign that she was not 100% physically but had recovered sufficiently to play

She opened up about the injury again after her first-round victory over fellow American Kristie Ahn and apparently made it worse while training for her second-round match

« An Achilles injury is not the one you want to play with because it can get worse, » she said

Williams said she has yet to decide whether she will play again this season, saying she needs two weeks of full rest, but said she still wants to continue her career

« I love to play tennis I love to compete It’s my job and I’m still pretty good at it I’m so close to some things and I feel like I’m almost there that’s what that keeps me going «

Williams also withdrew from Roland Garros in 2018 ahead of a last 16 clash with Maria Sharapova
