World News – UA – Severe thunderstorms to hit coast as warning issued


The Bureau of Meteorology tracks severe thunderstorms after they are detected on weather radar near Strathpine, Redcliffe, Caboolture and Numinbah Valley

These thunderstorms are now moving southeasterly and are expected to affect Coolangatta, Cleveland and Montville by 325h and the area southwest of Caloundra, Bribie Island and northern Bribie Island by 355h

The rainy sky that the inhabitants of the coast have been waiting for is finally here with the possibility of falls of up to 50mm flooding the area

Weather bureau forecaster Pieter Claassen said rainy weather was on the cards this weekend, including until next week

M Claassen said the chance of rain would likely decrease on Saturday morning before returning in the afternoon

« In places like Maroochydore there is a 50% chance that it will rain (it’s) a little more likely inland, « he said

Cloudy skies are expected to set in on Sunday, M Claassen foresees a « fairly active » day for the region

A 90% chance of rain is expected throughout the day, with falls of 10mm to 50mm expected

There is a « good chance » that residents of the coast will see thunderstorms on Sunday and a possibility that the weather will turn severe

« There is no direct alert for hail nor for damaging gusts of wind, « said M Claassen

Temperatures are expected to warm over the next two days, after a cool high of 26C on Saturday

He said Maroochydore would record a high of 29C on Sunday, around 3C above average, with a slight dip to 28C on Monday.

Thunderstorm activity is expected to remain « persistent » on the coast early next week, with a 70% chance of rain through Wednesday


A final curved ball could be thrown in this year’s AFL season, with thunderstorms set to hit the Gabba in the grand final
