Swimmer fights for life after being attacked by shark on Great Barrier Reef

A rescue helicopter responded to the attack on Britomart Reef off Lucinda, north of Townsville, Queensland, at approximately 1222pm (AEST) on Sunday

The man, who is believed to be in his 50s, was treated at the Dungeness boat launch in Lucinda before being airlifted to Townsville University Hospital, ABC News reported

Just a few weeks ago, a surfer was killed after sustaining fatal leg injuries in a shark attack on the Gold Coast

This was the second fatal shark attack in Queensland in just over two months after the death of Matthew Tratt, 36, while fishing underwater off Fraser Island in the beginning of july

In June, Gold Coast surfer Rob Pedretti, 60, died after being maimed by a three-meter shark at Salt Beach in South Kingscliff in northern NSW
