Manchester United deleted a tweet that seemed to shed light on the lack of supporters in the stadiums ahead of their game against Newcastle

Fans have not been allowed to attend matches since March amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, while there has also been controversy recently over plans to make a number of Premier matches League à la carte

United will travel to St James’ Park on Saturday night, a stadium known for its supporters away from the gods

And United’s official account tweeted on Saturday morning: « At least it’s not possible to go up 14 floors to get outside to St James’ Park for this one from where are you looking #NEWMUN? « With a laughing face emoji

The post was widely criticized by supporters, however, and Neville joined the pile on it when he shared it and posted: « How bad is this tweet? »

It was later deleted by United, but not before a number of supporters also expressed their disgust

« I’m sure a lot of people would rather go up those stairs than pay £ 15 to sit on their sofas to watch it, » one said, while another added: « The most disconnected football club in the country »

And another said: « We were a football club, now we are just a brand »

It remains to be seen when fans are finally allowed to return to the football fields, but this is an extremely controversial issue given that pubs and restaurants remain widely open across much of the country.

United, meanwhile, are in desperate need of a win over Newcastle as they look to bounce back from their humiliating 6-1 loss to Tottenham two weeks ago

Alex Telles could make his club debut after signing on deadline day, but Edinson Cavani will not be available as he continues to self-quarantine after arriving in England
