Jack Aitken has announced that his « impatience » prompted him to contact Williams for the first time to replace George Russell for his Formula 1 debut in Bahrain this weekend.

Campos Formula 2 driver Aitken will start his first Grand Prix in Bahrain on Sunday after being drafted from Williams after Russell’s move to Mercedes.

Russell is replacing Lewis Hamilton for the weekend after the seven-time world champion tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday.

Mercedes signed a deal with Williams to release Russell for the weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix, paving the way for reserve driver Aitken for the Williams seat.

« It’s been about 48 hours busy, but I’m glad it’s all sorted now, » said Aitken.

Aitken announced that as soon as news of Hamilton’s test was positive and Russell became an option for Mercedes, Russell quickly reached out to Williams about the seat.

« My impatience was so great that I actually turned to the team and said, ‘What’s going on?' » Aitken revealed.

« That was Tuesday afternoon and they just said, ‘We’re evaluating the situation, we’ll get back to you, just get stuck. ‘.

« So I was stuck for a few hours and said, come on! Finally it expanded overnight and on Wednesday morning the confirmation came through.

Autosport knows that in the event of a promotion from Russell to Mercedes, Aitken would always get the Williams drive, regardless of other drivers like Stoffel Vandoorne and Nico Hulkenberg.

The race on Friday in Bahrain is the second time that Aitken is driving in the Williams FW43, having appeared in practice earlier this year for the Styrian Grand Prix.

After Aitken made another seat adjustment and adjustment on Wednesday, he said the car « feels pretty good ». .

« I did the first RP in Austria. So it was just a matter of checking that everything is as I remember it, « said Aitken.

« We have the luxury of having a lot more time to prepare and settle in, so it’s been pretty smooth so far.

« The goal for the team has not changed. We want to try to get into the fight with the midfielders and hopefully if there is a little bit of chaos and luck, hopefully some points.
