A plan to replace the “desolate” Broadmarsh shopping center in Nottingham with an ambitious “post-Covid wilderness” has been revealed.

Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust claims to have worked with landscape architects to redefine the “imposing gray urban jungle” and replace the concrete with 100% natural green spaces. This is the beginning of a great idea to reconnect the city with Sherwood Forest and evoke the spirit of Robin Hood – bring wildlife to « nature poor city dwellers » and the millions of visitors it attracts each year.

Paul Wilkinson, CEO of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trusts, said: “Transforming Broadmarsh into natural green space would bring people together and restore nature to the city at a time when natural green space has never been so appreciated or needed. It could also serve as a stepping stone to securing investments in green growth and infrastructure and fulfilling the long-term drive to reconnect our city to the old Sherwood Forest landscape and we urge people to support our vision. ”

Since the website was returned to the council in the summer after intu’s demise, there has been a lot of local talk about the future of the website. A change. The organization’s petition calling for the area to be converted into a public green space secured almost 11. 000 signatures and other polls have also supported the call for a new green space.

Wilkinson added, “By putting people and nature at the center of plans for the Broadmarsh site, Nottingham City Council could take this unique opportunity to create a green future for the city center. Not only does this new vision signal the city’s commitment to protecting 30% of the land across the UK for nature by 2030, but it also supports Nottingham’s ambition to be the UK’s first climate neutral city, boost tourism and ensure that Nottingham is separated from The crowd takes off Cities across the UK are competing for investment to rebuild their economies after the effects of Covid-19. ”

The charity worked with Influence Landscape Architects to redesign the wildlife-transformed space, reflecting the site’s history as a wetland along the old Leen River and long-lost gardens. The vision for the location includes barrier-free sidewalks based on a centuries-old city street plan to reconnect important parts of the city.

The Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust believes that a natural green space in the heart of the city would increase resilience to climate change, improve connectivity for people and create an attractive setting for existing businesses and attract new investors.

Influence Landscape Architects General Manager Sara Boland said, “It has become critical for people, especially city center residents, to visit positive, well-designed and diverse, easily accessible public open spaces. During the initial lockdown, it became clear that our role in providing such spaces and our understanding of the social and spatial implications of COVID-19 were only just beginning to materialize as more and more people began to enjoy outdoor spaces to exercise regularly.

“Open spaces in cities are often formal, structured and pocketed, and this provided the opportunity for a completely unrestricted and wild approach to a considerable space. A chance to make a profound difference and impact the landscape of our next city, Nottingham.

Combine this with the fact that the rebuilding of urban spaces is now an identified and real opportunity in landscaping and that money is scarce for extensive aftercare strategies for heavily designed landscapes. A unique path with this partnership approach to the unique space of Broadmarsh. ”

The Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust also believes that the Vison « offers exciting opportunities2 to explore the potential for sustainable urban agriculture in the remaining structures of the former underground shopping center – representing the productive uses of the city’s famous cave system imitates.
