The Washington Wizards and Houston Rockets have agreed to act two angry star point guards, John Wall and Russell Westbrook, in a blockbuster deal. The teams announced Wednesday.

The Wizards are sending Wall and a lottery-protected NBA draft pick for the first round of 2023 to the Rockets for Westbrook, which both players wanted and had simmered for weeks.

The selection for the first round 2023 is lottery-protected for the magicians. If it’s not taught this year, there are a number of safeguards in place, including selection numbers. 1-12 in 2024, picks 1-10 in 2025, and picks 1-8 in 2026, sources said. If it isn’t promoted to Houston as the first choice by 2026, it will become the second choice in 2026 and 2027, respectively, sources told ESPN.

Discussions had stalled since mid-November until the two managing directors, Tommy Sheppard from Washington and Rafael Stone from Houston, decided to call on Tuesday afternoon. They negotiated a deal within hours, sources said.

For the Wizards and Rockets, it is hoped that the exchange of guards will help convince each team’s two franchisees, Bradley Beal of Washington and James Harden of Houston, to stick with their teams for the long term. Harden has asked for a deal privately, and Beal could become a free agent in 2021.

Westbrook and Wizards coach Scott Brooks has a long history, spending seven years playing and coaching together in Oklahoma City.

Westbrook’s partnership with Harden in Houston lasted only a season after the recent MVPs took a lead in orchestrating a summer trade in 2019 that included Chris Paul along with two picks for the first round and two swap rights for the Westbrook sent first round to Oklahoma City in exchange for Chris Paul.

Westbrook and Harden announced this off-season that the Rockets were planning to move to other destinations, particularly the Brooklyn Nets in Harden’s case.

Houston’s stance on Harden hasn’t changed, a senior Rockets source told ESPN, saying the team hopes to compete with the perennial MVP candidate on the roster this season and see no scenario in The opener would be acted upon previously hardening. The Rockets have announced that they would need a return, which sources say would include a young, potential franchise cornerstone and massive package of picks in any potential deal for Harden.

Sources said Westbrook cited a desire to « play my game » and concerns about the Rockets’ recreational culture. Westbrook was an All-NBA third-team selection averaging 27 during his season with the Rockets. 2 points, 7. 9 rebounds and 7. 0 templates per game, despite having been slow to take off after an 11-year tenure in Oklahoma City after knee surgery and adapting to a new franchise while recovering from knee surgery.

Westbrook’s season ended sourly after reporting late to the Walt Disney World Bubble of the NBA for contracting the coronavirus and straining his right quadriceps while on the seeding schedule. The injury resulted in Westbrook missing the first four games of the first-round playoff series against Thunder, his former team. He fought an average of 17 on his return. 9 points and 4. 6 assists when shooting 42. 1% off the floor during the playoffs.

Westbrook, 32, has $ 133 million on contract for three seasons remaining, with a player option for the final year. An All-Star for nine of the last ten seasons, he joined Oscar Robertson as the only player to average a triple-double in one season in his last three campaigns for Thunder.

Wall, 30, hasn’t played since December. 26, 2018, missed two seasons with injuries to Achilles tendon and knee. He owes three more years and $ 132 million for his contract. Wall and Beal used to be considered the best young backcourt in the league, but that future was derailed by the string of injuries from Wall, who proved in the off-season to regain much of his speed and blast.
