Scott Parker has warned Fulham not to get into a « spiral of negativity » because of their losing start to the season, otherwise they will be « buried »

Two losses and seven goals conceded called the newly promoted squad’s qualifications into question and named them as contenders for early relegation

But Parker is using his experience playing at West Ham and Newcastle – where a streak of three or four bad results would trigger a ‘massive crisis’ – to guide Fulham through a rough patch

Fulham will have to give up for every point to stay in the top flight and has been warned their level will need to be increased tenfold to compete

Parker said: « My main point is that we are going to lose games this year and we cannot afford to take this on a downward spiral.

« I’ve been involved in relegations and what makes you relegate at the end of the day is that spiraling effect, a knockdown where slowly the atmosphere, the confidence, the team spirit, cohesion undermines you and bury you

« In my time in West Ham, in my time here where we’ve been relegated, defeats are going to happen But you can’t afford to let the noise affect you

« The noise was coming from outside, the ‘two on the rebound, three on the rebound’, ‘they didn’t do this, they didn’t do it’

« Two, three, four negative results, it was a massive crisis A massive crisis And before you know the confidence is low, the whole club has a negative impression ‘We are going to fight’

« Of course for this club this year and my team I won’t let that happen I don’t want this to happen because I know how important it is going to be »

Accepting that the season will be difficult is far from being « defeatist, says Parker. He explained that he is working on the mindset of his players to be tough and focus on what they can improve on

He added: « This is reality Like anything in life, if you have a sense of realism and a sense of reality of what something is going to look like, then it’s always easy to understand and get into that and work with

« What I mean is, for my team, my players and us as a football club – and I include the fans as well – if we expect to be tenth in this division this year, or we’re not going to lose three on the rebound, so there’s a fine line…

« This is not a defeatist (attitude), I don’t want my players to accept it, but at the same time we have to understand that this is probably the reality of what we are going to face »

After enjoying a positive winning promotion season, the Premier League slog is different « Football clubs when you lose football games are not good places, » Parker said
