Aggressive testing and treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) in Melbourne saw a sharp decline in Hep-C in this demographic, according to Aidsmap reports connected.
HCV is commonly transmitted through condomless sex in MSM, as well as drug use through injection.
Researchers in the Co-EC study published their results in Clinical Infectious Diseases and enrolled 198 HIV-positive MSM with a chronic HCV diagnosis in 22 doctor’s offices in Melbourne between 2016 and 2018. These practices care for about 85% of MSM living with HIV in the city. The group had an average age of 47 years.
One hundred and eighty-six of the study participants began direct-acting antiviral treatment for HCV. Of all participants who started treatment, 84% achieved a sustained virologic response 12 weeks after completing therapy, which was considered a cure. Of the 163 men who completed treatment and attended their 12-week follow-up appointment, 98% were cured.
Between 2012 and 2019, between 2012 and 2019, between 2. 434 and 3. 476 MSM received HIV coverage in a given year. This corresponded to 13. 801 cumulative years of follow-up for analysis of the study.
Of these men, 50% to 60% received HCV antibody tests annually and 10% to 14% positive tests annually. The annual rate of positive tests among those who were initially HCV negative decreased 83% from 54% to 9% between 2016 and 2019.
The rate of HCV diagnoses decreased by 25% annually from 1 between 2012 and 2019. 7 diagnoses to 0. 5 diagnoses per 100 cumulative years of follow-up.
« A high efficacy of treatment by non-specialists demonstrates the feasibility of a scale-up of treatment in this population, » concluded the study authors.
