RTE star Ryan Tubridy is set to host an entirely different Late Late Toy Show tonight thanks to Covid-19, but it promises to be as heartwarming and emotional as ever.
The host has been teasing his fans about this year’s festive show for the past few months as he has said it will be the most important one yet.
Today it was announced that the theme of this year’s Toy Show will be the wonderful world of Roald Dahl.
This year’s Toy Show 2020 set features quirky characters and props from the legendary Roald Dahl’s books, including nine-year-old Eve Murphy who will be dressed up as Matilda.
Speaking to RTE from the extravagant set of Studio 5, Ryan told the Irish Sun, “Roald Dahl is the perfect choice because he states in his books that the world is not a perfect place, but life is not a fairy tale the world is magical and rewards goodness.
« There’s no point in pretending that there was no fear, but we can acknowledge it and have fun doing it. ”
He said, « It’s the first time I’ve cried properly in a while. I’d rather not tell you what sparked it, but it’s safe to say that we’re doing something big this year with the Toy Show – bigger than normal.
« Which is quite a success considering how different this year’s show is going to be compared to normal years. «
Ryan showed up today and spoke to hosts Maura Derrane and Daithi O’Se about tonight’s show.
He shared his excitement for the show when he said this year is for the « geeks and crazy people ». .
On the RTE show, he stated, « The Late Late Toy Show is for geeks and crazy people.
« If you’re a geek and a madman, you’re in our gang. Come to us because tonight is just as important to you as it is to everyone else. « . «
Fair City star Johnny Ward shared a nostalgic clip of his appearance on the Toy Show with Gay Byrne 25 years ago.
The actor, who also starred in Love / Hate, is best known for his role as villain Ciaran Holloway on RTE soap.
Today he shared the clip of him on Instagram in which he sang a melody from the musical Oliver about the festive special.
Ryan has been referred to as the « Toy Man » by many children across Ireland, but it seems that his own children aren’t that many fans of the Toy Show as they don’t usually see the whole thing.
The host admitted that his daughters aren’t thrilled to see him on the annual Christmas show.
He told RSVP Live that they were « ashamed » and added, « If I say they don’t see it, of course they’ll keep an eye out – I was joking!

Speaking to his followers, he said, “We’re taking a little break in rehearsals and the kids have been fun, nice and sweet so far, so I’ll have a sandwich and some jellies now You’re toy type. ”
This year’s Toy Show will be special tonight as RTE will launch a new children’s charity fund during tonight’s show.
Ryan Tubridy said, “Every year at the Toy Show we are inspired by children across Ireland with stories of hope, resilience and triumph over adversity.
“In this extraordinary year, we have been moved by the generosity of the children of Ireland who have taken care of each other and the less fortunate in their communities.
