World News – United States – Listeria outbreak in several sick states 7 Mass Residents

Public health and regulatory officials are investigating a deli-linked listeria outbreak that has sickened at least 10 people in three states and has been blamed for one death, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention

Of the 10 sick, seven are from Massachusetts, two from New York and the deceased was from Florida. Those affected include eight women and two men, aged 40 to 89, according to the CDC

The illnesses were reported from August 6 to October 3, and all 10 people had to be hospitalized, the CDC said

Nine of those sick people were asked by state and local public health officials about the food they ate in the month before their illness, and all said they had eaten cold cuts at the Italian, such as salami, mortadella and prosciutto

They also said they bought prepackaged cold cuts and sliced meats from deli counters in various locations, CDC said

Deli meats can contain listeria bacteria, which is why the CDC recommends that people avoid eating deli meats unless they are heated to an internal temperature of 165 ° F or until it is boiling just before serving

Eating food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that mainly affects adults over 65, people with weakened immune systems and pregnant women, according to the CDC

Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle pain, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and seizures Pregnant women usually only have a fever and  » other flu-like symptoms, such as fatigue and muscle aches, but infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature labor, or a life-threatening newborn infection, health officials say

People with listeriosis typically report symptoms starting one to four weeks after eating the contaminated food, CDC says Some people, however, have reported symptoms starting as late as 70 days after exposure or as early as the day even from the exhibition

If you have eaten cold cuts and have symptoms of listeria infection, it is advisable to call your doctor

To avoid getting sick, the CDC recommends washing your hands after handling deli meats; clean refrigerator shelves, kitchen counters, utensils and other surfaces that may have come in contact with deli meats; and preventing deli juice from spilling onto other foods, utensils and food preparation surfaces

Health officials also say you shouldn’t store unopened, factory-sealed deli packages in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. During this time, opened packages and meat sliced in a local deli should not be kept for more than five days in the refrigerator.

Although evidence has shown deli meats to be a likely source of this outbreak, an investigation is underway to determine if there is a specific type of deli or common supplier linked to the disease, the CDC said.

US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is part of the investigation
