At least 10 bodies were found on Wednesday in an anonymous mass grave in a Tulsa cemetery where investigators are looking for the remains of the victims of the Tulsa race massacre in 1921, the state archaeologist said. oklahoma

« What we found was an indication that we were in a large area a large hole that had been dug and in which several individuals had been placed and buried there. This constitutes a mass grave, » said the state archaeologist Kary Stackelbeck

Investigators found 10 wooden coffins containing what was initially believed to be a person in each, Stackelbeck said She said further examination of the coffins and remains, which were not removed, was needed

« These skeletal remains are not in very good condition, » Stackelbeck said. « Not the worst condition we’ve seen but they’re not the best »

Combined with a set of remains found nearby on Tuesday, at least 11 bodies have now been discovered, according to Stackelbeck

Phoebe Stubblefield, a forensic anthropologist at the University of Florida, descendant of a massacre survivor who is involved in research, said patience was needed before anyone could expect to know the identities of the remains or cause of death

« We will need a considerable amount of time to study them because preservation, the teeth have shown themselves well, but the non-dental structures » have deteriorated, Stubblefield said

Stackelbeck said it was too early to say for sure that the remains are victims of the massacre, even though they were found near an area known as « Original 18 », where the records funeral homes say massacre victims were buried

There are two headstones in Original 18 marking the graves of two victims of the massacre, but the area where the remains were found on Wednesday is unmarked

« We have not yet done our assessment to say that these actually represent the victims of the massacre, » Stackelbeck said « The fact that they are associated with the same event or the same period of burial is something that we are still evaluating »

Mayor of Tulsa GT Bynum, who in 2018 offered to search for victims of the violence and then budgeted $ 100,000 to fund it after previous research failed to find victims qualified as significant discovery in the ‘history of the city

« What we know today is that there is a mass grave in Oaklawn Cemetery where we have no record of anyone buried, » Bynum said

The latest search at Oaklawn began on Monday An earlier excavation of another part of the cemetery ended in July without any significant finds

The violence took place on May 31 and June 1, 1921, when a white mob attacked Black Wall Street in Tulsa, killing around 300 people, mostly blacks, and injuring 800 others, robbing and setting fire to shops, houses and churches

The massacre took place two years after what is known as the ‘red summer’, when hundreds of African Americans died at the hands of white mobs in the violence around the US that was depicted in HBO TV shows « Watchmen » and « Lovecraft County »

It also received renewed attention after President Donald Trump chose Tulsa as the location for a rally in June amid a nationwide toll on police brutality and racial violence Trump moved the date to avoid coinciding with a June 10 celebration in the Greenwood district commemorating the end of slavery
