World News – US – Broncos give Rypien start at QB for Jets game

ENGLEWOOD, Colo – In an injury-ridden season that has led to a steep drop in offense, the Denver Broncos (0-3) will start their third different quarterback in four weeks when Brett Rypien opens the game behind center on Thursday night against the New York Jets

Broncos coach Vic Fangio told the team on Tuesday morning that Rypien, who played in the Broncos’ last practice in Sunday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, will start against the Jets Rypien said Fangio informed him of the decision on Monday

Fangio also said there was a chance that Jeff Driskel, who started the Buccaneers game, would play in certain situations against the Jets.

“We’ll see how the game plays out,” Fangio said “We can change it multiple times  »

Drew Lock started Denver’s first two games but suffered a right shoulder injury (pitch) in week two against the Pittsburgh Steelers He should miss at least two more games

Rypien, nephew of longtime NFL quarterback Mark Rypien, was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster last week.He will be the ninth different quarterback to start a game for the Broncos since the start of the 2017 season

The Broncos also signed Blake Bortles, a 2014 Jacksonville Jaguars first-round pick in 2014, but Fangio said on Monday it was « unrealistic » to expect him to be an option to start against the Jets

Rypien entered Sunday’s game relieving Driskel with 9 minutes and 56 seconds left He completed his first eight assists but his last attempt was intercepted in the end zone when he tried to make a throw-in to Jerry Jeudy Rypien finished the game 8 of 9 for 53 yards

Fangio said he liked the way Rypien got the ball out quickly on a day the Broncos struggled with the Buccaneers passing rush

« He played pretty well in there, » Fangio said. « We want to see if this can continue  »

Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur added: « He executes well, he’s fast, he gets the ball out quickly »

When asked what attributes he had that helped him the most during his time with the team, Rypien replied: « I think fast and I get the ball out  »

Move comes with struggling Broncos offense The squad surrendered 13 sacks (all in the last two games), tied for second-highest allowed in the league

The Broncos are also ranked 30th for league scoring (15 points per game) and 29th for both total offensives (2,893 yards per game) as well as third-down conversions (342%). only four touchdown passes this season (one by Lock, three by Driskel)

Rypien, who arrived at the Broncos as an undrafted rookie in 2019, spent most of last season on the practice squad and was initially signed there again after training camp in this year when the Broncos kept two quarterbacks on the roster at Lock and Driskel

« It was good to go for a ride [last Sunday], » said Rypien. « Hope it can continue until Thursday  »
