Every week the celebrities of Dancing With the Stars Season 29 get better and have « premieres, » and it was Disney Channel star Skai Jackson who had that honor when he is about winning a 10 from a judge in week 4
“Skai was able to be authentic and show what she was really feeling and bring out those emotions in the dance, which then uplifted the dance,” her professional dance partner Alan Bersten told TV Insider
And this came after a fall in week 2 « I think this is a testament to her character, her determination, her persistence, never give up and keep fighting and a little stumble is wrong stop it, « he said of his bounce « Everyone has seen this now »
Here, Bersten discusses his partnership with Skai and the changes for Season 29 (Tyra Banks as host, replacing Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews, and former pro and champion Derek Hough as judge)
What makes you and Skai such a great pair? Was there something that you felt from the start or that developed over the weeks?
Alan Bersten: It helps that when we first met we had a lot of fun It was a fun experience Rehearsals are fun Luckily we both trust each other so if there is a little problem, it gets sorted out so quickly because she knows I’m here to help her and I know she’s serious about it Confidence level really helps us move forward and forward, and she’s having a good time so the studio and the rehearsals go really fast I’m able to teach her very quickly just because she wants to learn
It was a double-edged sword Yeah, there was extra pressure but also I know what to expect now I think I know what to expect I thought I knew what to expect I don’t know what to expect, let’s face it every season is different The pressure to win is off because i already wake up and see my mirrorball, « oh i won! » But I really want that second Mirrorball I want to keep winning And I want Skai to not only feel the recognition but this achievement and feel really good about himself
You mentioned that things are different every season, and this season there is no audience. How did that affect you? Has it changed the way you and Skai prepare each week?
No it doesn’t change the way we prepare It’s different for show days You just have to turn it on even more just because there is no applause from the live audience Usually there are 1000 people in the room or something, and you can really hear the difference Luckily Skai doesn’t know the difference She’s never performed in that ballroom with people
For all the pros who have come here, you really have to beat it yourself This is a TV show for millions of people and the show does a great job of adapting to that If you look at the ballroom it doesn’t look like anything is missing and I feel like the producers did a really good job with it
That’s not all that’s different Tyra’s host, Derek is a judge, new protocols are in effect and rightly so for everyone’s safety…
In life there always has to be changes to keep her fresh Derek is an amazing addition He knows exactly what to say because he’s been through it He’s won six times, he’s been on the other side I feel like he’s bringing something not only to the table for himself, but he’s bringing something from Bruno [Tonioli] and Carrie Ann [Inaba], so I feel like he’s a great addition to the series
I feel like Tyra is such a great addition to the series too Last week there was a blunder, but it wasn’t even her fault I feel like as that host, she takes rap for everything If something goes wrong she takes the blame She does an amazing job, and it’s not easy to come in after 28 seasons and be the new host, but i feel like she’s there, she kills it every monday, and i don’t know if i can say it’s a good change or a bad change, but i feel like she does such a good job and we are very lucky to have it
And with COVID protocols, I think it’s safe to say that we’re all happy that we can be on TV and do a show, so if we have to wear a mask and get tested every day, that is not a big deal I don’t mind going there and getting tested every day, wearing a mask and staying six feet apart because at the end of the day we’re back on TV doing what we love
You mentioned the error last week Even though you weren’t a part of it, was that something you discussed with Skai?
Yeah, I think everyone’s on the same page It was just a mistake and it’s live TV, things like that happen I think Skai knows that firsthand just because that since our little mistake in week 2 it’s a live show you keep going, and that’s what Tyra did too
Tonight is 80’s night and you’re dancing jazz to « The Power of Love » Can you tease what we’ll see?
Crazy outfits, big hair I’m really excited just because we can dance a little tribute to Back to the Future Obviously this song is made popular with this movie as well, and we went to see a DeLorean [machine to turn back time] We saw some cool packages this week I’m really excited And the dancing is really fun It’s high intensity and lots of lifts
Honestly this season is not about me I just want Skai to go there and feel confident and really confident in herself that she can learn something Every week she goes there and not just me surprises, but I’m sure she surprises herself how much she has improved and I actually mentioned this to her a few days ago The difference from when she came in and today is so vast She’s become more mature and I already see a difference in her dancing She’s learning faster She just tries harder She’s having more fun with it, and I think that is a beautiful thing that I can be a part of
Yeah I feel like this season more than ever, I’m more supportive and if something goes wrong I don’t lose my temper right away I just take a second just because I see what good point she tries and how much fun she is having i don’t want to spoil it for her It’s more about staying positive and Skai keeps saying that the most important thing is to stay positive
