The Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball team received new themes ahead of the 2020-21 season. In fact, for the first time ever, both the men’s and women’s teams will wear the same home and away uniforms (although there will be some setbacks and alternatives have yet to be determined). .
But where do the horse chestnut uniforms rank in the conference overall? Without further ado, let’s get in . . .
The Illinois Nike uniforms look vintage, but not good. The “Illinois” writing on the chest looks dated, and the blue neckline combined with the white side stripes (on the orange uniforms) or the blue side stripes (on the white ones) is distracting.
When your colors are this maroon and gold, it’s hard to do much with these uniforms. But the Gophers’ Nike kits aren’t the worst. In fact, even the gold jerseys are kind of not an eyesore. The big knock I would give them are the uncomfortable streaks on the shorts that for some reason meet at the front of the shorts instead of going down the sides.
With colors like black and gold, you’d think the boilermakers would pull off a solid and classic uniform. However, Purdue’s Nike basketball jerseys leave a lot to be desired. The color block on top of the shoulders and the stylized « Purdue » on the chest make a smooth uniform difficult. Kettle down on this look.
The Huskers Adidas jerseys are new this season. Nebraska eliminates the pinstripes in both home and away uniforms. While the red away jersey is largely identical beyond the pinstripe distance, the white home jersey received the additional word art treatment, with the program opting for a stylized “Huskers” instead of the traditional “Nebraska” emblazoned on the chest.
Overall, the pinstripes never really go with the basketball motif (who do the Huskers think? The Yankees?) and getting rid of them was a good move. However, newly stylized word marks on the chest are difficult to read, and perhaps the program should have stuck to its traditional block letters.
Badgers’ Under Armor uniforms go a long way with the still generally simple design, updated for the first time in nearly two decades prior to last season. For example, the strips on the shorts run horizontally across the leg before wrapping completely around the thigh.
The neckline on the leotard is a bit strange, with blocks of color changing from front to back, but the writing on the chest is simple. Also, the numbers reflect those of the soccer jerseys which is cool for the brand.
The Scarlet Knights unveiled new uniforms ahead of last season. The red, black and white Adidas uniforms are simpler than their previous versions and eliminate details on the shoulder straps. The Rutgers writing on the uniforms is different, but the rest of the elements of the uniform are pretty normal.
Wildcats’ Under Armor uniforms are perfect for their brand. I can’t think of a better way to get up for a neat private school on the north Chicago coast. The purple is tasteful, the font is collegial, the cutout conservative.
We need to talk about Northwestern’s alternatives though, as these Gothic script uniforms might be the best alternatives in the conference. If only college basketball could be played on Halloween. Or in a medieval city in France.
As simple and (okay, I’ll just say) boring as the Spartans’ soccer uniforms are, the Nike basketball universities have taken a different turn. In fact, if you tuned in to a Michigan state basketball game in the past few years, you’d think they were watching people like Oregon or Baylor as some of the uniform combos were nearly fluorescent.
When it comes to the usual whites at home, however, the state of Michigan has provided a classic update (like, literally, a Hellenistic throwback) that sees the sides of its jerseys and shorts as a convoluted connection to the Greek roots of the Spartan Mascot. It is an interesting attitude to bind the brand together through culturally relevant symbolism. However, this is not an art history class.
While the Hawkeyes ‘soccer uniforms are literal carbon copies of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ uniforms, the Nike basketball get-ups are way cooler (my prejudices about the Steelers aside). Iowa basketball jerseys do a good job of drawing the line between bold and classic. They’re clearly Iowa, unlike other black and gold colleges, but the jerseys are simple enough not to be distracting.
That being said, the black uniforms are clearly the best, while the gold falls a little too far on the « flashy » side of things. The exception is Iowa’s throwback jersey with the script Iowa.
So easy. So classic. Like their soccer jerseys, but better. Nittany Lions’ Nike basketball uniforms – both at home and on the go – benefit from a lack of jewelry. The plain blue jerseys have a white side stripe and a plain white wordmark on the chest. The whites are reversed. Not a fancy cutout. Not a strange iconography. No strange cuts.
So the challenge is that Penn State’s jerseys are very indistinguishable from each other. So it’s difficult to get them too high on the list.
For fans of track and field in Ohio, the new Nike basketball uniforms are an amazing brand. The big change from the latest uniforms is the addition of a token stripe down the side of the jerseys that continues over the shorts. The word « Ohio State » on the meshed chest is distinctive without being distracting. The new uniforms have managed to incorporate many of the branding elements that make the Buckeyes stand out – like the Buckeye stickers actually above the waist of the shorts.
The disguise is spot on here – forget everything I said about simplicity as a way for basketball uniforms. While the University of Maryland deserves to boldly incorporate what may be the union’s boldest state flag into their uniforms, the Under Armor basketball jerseys manage to do what the soccer jerseys can’t: be tasteful. In the details, add the numbers and these jerseys are straight fire.
We also have to accept that these newcomers can reinforce their ridiculous patterns on the hard court in ways that they have not yet shown on the soccer field.
They’ll never convince me that « blue and yellow » look good together, but there’s no denying the Wolverines have pretty sick basketball jerseys. While the Jump-Man wasn’t exactly a good icon for the soccer team (it’s literally a basketball logo), the Nike brand subsidiary has certainly found a natural fit for the basketball jerseys.
The neckline is probably the best part of the whole build and goes back to the Tune Squad jerseys in Space Jam with the striped detailing around the neck and arms. Somehow the overall uniform – especially the maze version – takes me back to the 90s, especially when players like Jordan Poole opt for the shorty shorts.
The Hoosier’s Adidas uniforms are classic, timeless and perfect. Although they have actually been updated in recent years, they still look like the jerseys Ray Tolbert could have worn earlier. Like Penn State’s soccer uniforms, Indiana jerseys are reminiscent of an easier time when Indiana dominated basketball in the Big Ten. The stripes around the waistband and bottom of the shorts are whimsical without being intrusive, while toned down with a simple wordmark and neat neckline.
If there’s a mistake at this point on the list in placing such a simple jersey, take the Hoosiers’ warm-ups as reason enough to raise it. They distinguish the crimson and cream-colored jerseys from Alabama, Oklahoma or Arkansas with something unique. They also like the pajama pants of my dreams.
