The Steelers win improved the team’s record to 9-0, keeping them three games ahead of the Baltimore Ravens at AFC North.
It’s going to be that time of year when the playoff picture pops in on itself and terms like « hunting » and « goodbye in the first round » are thrown around.
If the season ended today, the Steelers themselves would have one of the latter number one in the AFC’s new seven-team playoff field. Their next division rival, the Ravens, would squeak into the postseason with the third placeholder and a seventh seed.
From there, Baltimore would immediately face the runners-up Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes, the current face of the league, at Arrowhead Stadium. Looking ahead to this weekend, the 8-1 Chiefs have an interesting matchup with the 6-3 Las Vegas Raiders in primetime on Sunday evening. The Raiders defeated the Chiefs in the first match of the season between the two, delivering their only defeat so far in Kansas City and taking the goat from Chiefs trainer Andy Reid.
The Buffalo Bills lead the AFC East, and their 7-3 mark is good for a number three. They would face the sixth seed Miami Dolphins and rekindle a rivalry from decades ago, with young quarterbacks Josh Allen and Tua Tagovailoa standing for Jim Kelly and Dan Marino. The BIlls say goodbye this weekend as Miami takes on the 3-6 Denver Broncos.
The last playoff matchup in the current picture would be the 6-3 Indianapolis Colts currently playing at AFC South against the Raiders. As mentioned earlier, the Raiders get another shot in Kansas City this Sunday while the Colts face the challenge as they host Aaron Rodgers and the 7-2 Green Bay Packers.
The Steelers’ nine wins so far have not always been pretty, and there are few wins that cannot be complained about. But an ugly win is a win nonetheless, and the Steelers have, at least from the looks of it, put together enough to thaw out of the cool January air for a moment in six weeks and watch their first opponent answer himself on TV.
